Sensex down 19 points in opening trade on weak global cues

The BSE benchmark Sensex fell marginally by 19 points in opening trade on Wednesday, extending Tuesday’s losses on continued selling by foreign funds and retail investors amid mixed cues from global markets.

The 30-share barometer, which lost 69.92 points in Tuesday’s trade, moved down further by 19 points, or 0.10 per cent, to 18,725.56 in opening trade on Wednesday.

Shares of state-run oil firms, banking, power and healthcare companies remained under pressure.
Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty index shed 11.75 points, or 0.20 per cent, to 5,262.00.

Market experts said the trading sentiment remained somewhat bearish amid a mixed trend on other Asian bourses, following overnight losses in the U.S. market.
In particular, stocks of state-run oil companies such as Hindustan Petroleum Corp, Bharat Petroleum and Indian Oil faced selling pressure as rising oil prices in global markets put pressure on their earnings.

In the Asian region, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was trading 0.32 per cent lower, while Japan’s Nikkei was up marginally by 0.31 per cent cent on Wednesday morning. In the U.S., the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.10 per cent lower in Tuesday’s trade.

Terrestrial signals

All this makes a big difference!” The February 2007 CIIKPMG report shows how terrestrial signals of, say, Delhi Doordarshan can reach a whopping 87.9% of India’s population. Compare that with a dismally pathetic 2- 3% internet penetration within India. So where lies the real bottleneck to the growth for this ‘apparent’ next gen advertising platform? According to Gaurav Arora, Delhi Head, G2 India, “The low ad-spend is because...the senior decision makers on the client side still believe that it’s a cost-centre rather than being a revenue-centre activity. They think the money spent in online ads only go waste...” However, there are also various other reasons why online media is clearly not the favourite amongst media planners and marketers in the country. Preeti of Lowe Lintas outlines one of the reasons responsible for the failure of online advertisement industry in India, “The major chunk of advertising in India is targeted at masses; and a large audience base in India does not have access to the internet. That’s why marketers are less interested in advertising online.” Then there is Tarun Das, CEO, Oxygen Communication, who agrees with the issues of low internet penetration in the Indian subcontinent.

Indian Satyam to train Malaysian graduates

When IIPM comes to education, never compromise

The Indian Satyam to train Malaysian graduatesHyderabad-based Satyam Computer Services is going to team up with Government of Malaysia to train Malaysian graduates in computers. The programme will be called ‘Campus Link’ and is aimed at equipping young people in the country (Malaysia, that is!) to have their computer skills updated with required industry standards. Under the programme, both faculty members and students are going to be at Satyam’s facilities – both in Malaysia and in India. Badlisham Ghazali, the CEO of Malaysia’s Multimedia Development Corporation, was quoted in the media as saying: “Making our graduates industryready is not just about curriculum changes and training them but also about making the lecturers aware of the industry’s needs.” Satyam’s bestof- breed training programmes and learning interventions for Associates have been accorded the prestigious American Society for Training & Development’s ASTD BEST Awardsrecognition. And the company has been ranked 15th in ASTD’s Fourth Annual BEST Awards programme, and is among the 39 organisations from India, South Africa, and the United States to receive this highstatus award. So the Malaysian Government clearly knows what it’s doing. Good show Satyam!

Mukesh’s take-home wallet much fatter than Anil’s!

Mukesh Mukesh’s take-home wallet much fatter than Anil’s! Ambani’s net income (or take-home annual salary) is over 10 times than what younger brother Anil takes home – with a whopping annual package of almost Rs.25 crores! According to figures released for the financial year ended March 2007, Mukesh took home a total Rs.24.51 crores as Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). Anil Ambani, on the other hand, earns a package of about Rs.2.42 crores (from three of his group companies: Reliance Energy, Reliance Communications and Reliance National Resources Ltd.). Incidentally, Ambani Sr’s package is the highest among more than 10,000 top CEOs and directors who have disclosed their annual remuneration for the fiscal that recently concluded. Mukesh Ambani is followed by Kalanithi Maran (CMD of Sun TV) and Kavery Kalanithi (joint MD of Sun TV); their annual package is to the tune of Rs.3.26 crores, each (in2006-07). Bharti Airtel’s Sunil Mittal is ranked fourth, taking home Rs.15 crores, while K. Anji Reddy of Dr. Reddy’s Labs has been ranked fifth with an annual package of Rs.14.4 crores.
