NALCO: ANGUL

Unity in diversity is what nehru had envisaged when psu townships were set up. a case in point has been nalco, where people from different backgrounds have coexisted since years, says Dhrutikam Mohanty

As a policy, Nalco has been allocating 1% of its annual net profit for peripheral development activities of the succeeding year. Nalco has acquired about 3,500 acres of private land and the company has given employment to 1,635 land affected persons (whose land was acquired by Nalco). Out of the total permanent manpower of 4,524; about 33% comprises land affected people. Nalco has its own well-equipped hospital at Angul Township, which extends medical facilities to both employees and outsiders. Antaryami Mishra, an executive employee opines to us, “Here we have very good doctors and specialists in the hospital and their treatment is also good. So, most families of the township do not require going outside.” Under CSR activities, two mobile medical vans with doctors, pharmacists, attendants & essential medicines conduct health camps for 25 days in a month and provide free medical service to 38 villages in the periphery.

“In this township, we lead a cosmopolitan life – a life with a difference, where you can feel the soul of India. People from every corner and belonging to every culture have been residing peacefully here,” says M.S. Panda, PRO of the company, who has been residing here since 20 years. People in the company are generally more than satisfied with their professional and personal experience, but the company needs to address the complaints of people in the surrounding areas, who feel that the company hasn’t done enough for their lot.
