India’s number one family

Without a shadow of doubt, it is India’s number one family

After his death in a plane crash, the mantle fell on her elder son, Rajiv, then a pilot with Indian Airlines. Starting out as a reluctant politician in 1980, Rajiv became the PM four years later, when his mother was assassinated. Despite his wife Sonia’s reluctance, he took over as Prime Minister. But after Rajiv’s death, in 1991, Sonia was firm in her resolve, not to enter politics.

The resolve melted in 1998, when the entire party – humbled by regional satraps & the BJP – implored her to take over the leadership. Again, this was not typical dynastic succession. She led the Congress unsuccessfully in 1999 & became leader of Opposition. “She hears all of us patiently and then brings up certain points which we had overlooked. She is always prepared with backgrounders & is never wrong on facts,” says Congress leader Jitendra Prasad. She led the party to elections for the second time in 2004, but, rejected prime ministership. She emerged as an altruist politician – a rarest of the rare breed. Sonia has already kid-gloved her son Rahul into politics, making him AICC general secretary. Though he failed to lead the party to victory in UP Elections and largely stayed away from Gujarat, the party has loads of expectations from him and his mother. But can Rahul ever become the Prime Minister of India?
